The mural starts with honoring Rousemary Vega, depicted to the right of the elevator on the first floor. Rousemary Vega was a Lafayette parent at the time of the closure, alumni and prominent in the community through organizing to keep the school open. Amani Manning (ChiArts Class of 2025) paid homage to Rousemary’s activism through this depiction and the mural team decided on it’s location because of the high level of visibility when you enter the building. Amani can be seen with Rousemary in the far right photo, this photo was taken on the first day Rousemary got to see the mural in person and the day her interview was conducted. Honoring her resilience, passion and love for the community by permanently placing her back in the building when the city forcibly removed her when her family occupied room 111 in efforts to keep Lafayette open. Check the “Environmental Portraits and Audio Stories” page to hear her story in depth.
