1990-1999

This decade was a time of growth and community-building for Lafayette. During most of this decade Lafayette was home to 1000+ students and the staff at the time has been described as a close-family. To many, Lafayette was more than a school, but a beacon of hope created by the dedication of its teachers, staff and community involvement. Many of these teachers that started during this decade taught at Lafayette through the 2013 closing and even transferred over to Chopin Elementary in the fall of 2013. This was also a time of an increase in music programing, showcases and special occasions like a visit from Santa Clause. During the early half of the 1990s, Lafayette became one of the first neighborhood schools in the city to have working computers with Internet in every classroom thanks to the efforts of Dr. Vasquez (Vice Principal) and Paul Jordan (Building’s Engineer). The programs and support Lafayette provided the young people and families in the neighborhood were not innate to the building, but a clear representation of the care, dedication, collaboration and labor brought by the dedicated staff and administrators of the school.
