1980-1989

Like any time period come with it’s difficulties and social inequities, this decade has been described as one full of challenges while also a period of time that Lafayette provided a sense of community and stability for children and families in the neighborhood. With the context of divestment in the neighborhood over decades, Lafayette’s community and staff stayed strong to make it a space of hope, peace and a positive learning environment, even in moments of violence/challenges beyond the walls of the building. Some notable things from this period was the creation of Lafayette’s Black History Showcase (through music/dance/performance) led by Black teachers, strong advocacy for teachers for better support which led to a parking lot for teachers for the first time through union efforts under Ms. Reick’s leadership as Union Delegate and teachers taking students on memorable trips like Ms. Ryan’s trip to the hair salon or Ms. Rosenberg’s very memorable field trips.
